Native Americans may have used Echinacea for more than 400 years, for boils, abscesses, wounds, and snakebites. They would also chew the roots for toothaches, colds, sore throats, and coughs, and used it as a general “cure-all.” Throughout history people have used Echinacea to treat scarlet fever, syphilis, malaria, blood poisoning, and diphtheria. Echinacea preparations became increasingly popular in Germany throughout the 20th century. In fact, most of the scientific research on it has been conducted in Germany.

Echinacea is said to help boost the immune system for pets with chronic skin infection by increasing the production of white blood cells. It has also been used to treat ringworm. Pets with chronic upper respiratory infection may benefit from its use.

It might fight against bacteria, viruses, and yeasts, and could act as an antimicrobial for the mouth and urinary tract. It cleanses the blood, liver, lymph glands, and kidneys. Additionally, Echinacea has been used for pets with cancer.

Echinacea may promote tissue regeneration and reduce inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory property can be helpful in reducing the pain of arthritis.
